The International Federation of Robotics releases the latest robot density, with South Korea, Singapore, and Germany leading the way

Core tip: The density of robots in Asia's manufacturing industry is 168 per 10,000 employees. South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taipei all rank among the top ten countries with the highest degree of automation in the world. The EU has a robot density of 208 per 10,000 employees, with Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland ranking in the top ten globally. The density of robots in North America is 188 per 10,000 employees. The United States is one of the top ten countries with the highest level of manufacturing automation.

According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) in Frankfurt in January 2024, the installed capacity of industrial robots increased rapidly in 2022, with a new record of 3.9 million active robots worldwide. According to the density of robots, the countries with the highest level of automation are: South Korea (1012 units/10,000 employees), Singapore (730 units/10,000 employees), and Germany (415 units/10,000 employees). The data comes from the Global Robotics Report 2023 released by IFR.

Marina Bill, President of the International Federation of Robotics, said, "The density of robots reflects the global automation situation, allowing us to compare regions and countries. The speed at which industrial robots are applied globally is impressive: the latest global average robot density has reached a historic high of 151 robots per 10,000 employees, more than twice that of six years ago."

Global leading countries

South Korea is the world's largest industrial robot application country. Since 2017, the density of robots has increased by an average of 6% annually. The South Korean economy benefits from two major user industries - a strong electronics industry and a unique automotive industry.

Singapore closely follows, with 730 robots per 10,000 employees. Singapore is a small country with very few manufacturing workers.

Germany ranks third. As the largest economy in Europe, the average compound annual growth rate of robot density has been 5% since 2017.

Japan ranks fourth (397 robots per 10,000 employees). Japan is a major global manufacturer of robots, with an average annual increase of 7% in robot density from 2017 to 2022.

China and 2021 have the same ranking, maintaining fifth place. Despite having a massive workforce of approximately 38 million, Chinese massive investment in automation technology has resulted in a robot density of 392 per 10000 employees.

The density of robots in the United States has increased from 274 in 2021 to 285 in 2022, ranking tenth globally.
